Sky Smeed was born and raised outside of Chanute, Kansas in an old, one-room schoolhouse his parents bought and turned into a home in the early seventies. The first music he ever heard came from Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Van Morrison and Merle Haggard. Hearing this roots style of music playing on an old record player has stayed with Sky and is evident when he takes the stage to share his country tinged tunes of working hard, dogs, love, money, beer drinking and good times.
Sky has self-released four full length albums. His most recent, (Self-Titled) was recorded at Busby Recording Studios in Fredonia, KS. “The nine-track album reflects a less-packaged sound, simpler in melody, delivery and style. It still relies on drums, pedal steel, upright bass and occasional back-up vocals, but with a more laid-back feel. It is not hard to imagine this sound could have come from a high-quality, live recording in a small venue.” Tim Erickson, Chanute Tribune
Smeed played 150 shows in 2012, and was chosen as the opening act for Jason Aldean, Luke Bran, Eileen Jewell, Jason Isbell, Shooter Jennings, and Chuck Mead.
“I was driving on a sunny Saturday morning, listening to this fine music over and over, when it occurred to me that Sky Smeed deserves one of my highest compliments: he reminds me of Gram Parsons.” Chip Withrow, Muse’s Muse“The blues are another strong presence in Smeed’s latest offering, resulting in an album with nine tracks full of stories and catchy rhythms that make you want to listen!” Currentland
